One of the most famous Turbo X models in the Netherlands.

Who Doesn’t Know It? The 81-HLD-6 — Saab’s Top Model in 2008A year after production, this Turbo X was tested by David Joost Kamermans, a familiar name in the Saab world.

In 2023, this beautiful example entered our workshop for the first time. The customer’s wish was a complete inspection and subtle improvements to enhance the driving experience.

Over the past year and a half, we’ve gone through the entire Saab from A to Z.

This blog shows what we did to bring it fully up to date — and make it just that little bit better.

Suspension and Chassis

We started by tackling the suspension. All bushings and mounts were replaced to ensure that the Saab responds precisely as it should in every situation. The self-leveling rear shock absorbers were also replaced.

Engine Work

After the suspension, it was the engine’s turn. We inspected the engine thoroughly and replaced all wear parts, some out of necessity, others as a preventive measure.

The customer wanted the Turbo X restored to original performance, and preferably a little more but still true to the spirit of how the TX was designed in Trollhättan.

One of the first tests was to check the fuel injectors, ensuring that the fuel system was still performing as it should after all these years.

There was a slight difference in flow and the spray pattern could be improved. So, the injectors were ultrasonically cleaned and fitted with new seals and filters.

The intake manifold received new gaskets and the cleaned injectors were reinstalled.

We also brought the basics back into top shape by replacing:

  • 6 new ignition coils and spark plugs

  • Rear exhaust manifold

  • Alternator overhaul

  • Water pump and multi-belt

  • Cleaned throttle body

After this, the Saab already ran much better — but still a bit temperamental.

Timing System Upgrade

After a few tests, we decided to upgrade the complete timing system with a reinforced set. That turned out to be the right call, as the old set was due for replacement.

Whenever we replace the timing system, all parts that are removed are cleaned, and all gaskets and seals are renewed to maintain our OEM+ standard.

The benefits are clear: the engine oil stays cleaner longer, even after the repair, and remains clean if the owner changes it on time.

We recommend changing the oil every 10,000 km or once per year, whichever comes first. This keeps oil quality at its best and maintains the engine’s proper characteristics.

All work is photo-documented, and every bolt and nut is torqued to factory specifications.

Drivetrain

After the engine work, it was time to tackle the drivetrain:the gearbox, angle drive, driveshaft, Haldex system, and differential.

All were disassembled and fitted with new gaskets, seals, boots, rubbers, filters, and oils — and as the finishing touch, we added a short shifter to refine the connection between the gear lever and gearbox.

Custom Software and Tuning

Now that the Saab was mechanically perfect, it was time for custom software tuning. As an extra, we fitted a Turbosmart wastegate actuator, which closes the wastegate more effectively and helps the turbo reach optimal performance faster.

The result is a much more responsive throttle feel and smoother power delivery. The connection between throttle and power has been successfully optimized.

The software tuning was carried out by our in-house tuner DionHPT.nl

After tuning, it turned out that the clutch had seen better days, so we installed a new OEM clutch to ensure years of reliable service.

Meanwhile, the Saab also received a professional detailing, and the result speaks for itself:

Final Stage and Sale

Throughout the entire project, the owner and I often talked about his childhood dream

the 9-3 Viggen, and how he’d love to one day have one in his garage.

Now that this project is finished, the customer has decided to start looking for a 9-3 Viggen. That means this unique Turbo X will soon be for sale to a true enthusiast.

Before the sale, we’ll replace the Haldex system to ensure the Saab is completely future-proof.
